KKN Student Series #2: STUDENTS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS CONDUCT KKN BY INTRODUCING THE ‘BATANG NAPIER’ TEACHING TOOL, AN ENGAGING MULTIPLICATION LEARNING MEDIA FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Ketoyan, Wonosegoro, Boyolali (July 20, 2023) – Muhammad Fadhil, a student from the Mathematics Department participating in the KKN TIM II program at UNDIP, introduced the Batang Napier learning media to help children understand the concept of multiplication. The activity took place in the 5th-grade classroom at SD N Ketoyan on Thursday, July 20, 2023, beginning with education about the Batang Napier learning media and followed by a demonstration of how to use it to solve multiplication problems.

The lack of interest among children in mathematics makes them perceive learning math as difficult, particularly one of the basic operations: multiplication. Many students find multiplication challenging, especially when dealing with two-digit or larger numbers.

Therefore, the students from KKN TIM II UNDIP decided to create the Batang Napier educational program to address this issue. Batang Napier is a multiplication tool that works by translating multiplication problems into addition problems.

This Batang Napier educational program was very well received by the 5th-grade students at SD N Ketoyan. They found it easier to understand the concept of multiplication using Batang Napier.

“I understand it now, this is easier,” said one of the 5th-grade students of SD N Ketoyan after trying to solve multiplication problems using Batang Napier, even though previously they had difficulty with two-digit or more multiplication.

With this Batang Napier educational program, it is hoped that the 5th-grade students of SD N Ketoyan can understand and solve multiplication problems easily and efficiently, particularly those involving two-digit or more numbers. They are expected to grasp the basic concept of multiplication and apply it to more complex problems, helping improve their skills and abilities in mathematics.
