The Role of Mathematics Education in the Monopoly Game

by | Nov 23, 2023

In an era where mathematical skills are becoming increasingly important, there is an innovative approach to teaching mathematical concepts to the public, especially children. Education in exclusive games based on mathematical concepts has emerged as an innovative solution to introduce and understand mathematical concepts in a fun and interactive way. This moved Diponegoro University TIM II KKN students to introduce a monopoly game based on mathematical concepts.

This monopoly game is a game that is similar to monopoly games in general. However, the thing that differentiates it is the rules for playing it. First, players must roll the dice to determine the move of the game. If they stop at a question mark square, then that player must create a math question and be answered by all the other players. This aims to ensure that players, especially children, have dexterity, accuracy and a high level of focus in answering the questions given. If they stop at a plot with a picture of a card, the player is free to choose to take the “I’M SMART” card or the “MATH IS ASIK” card. If you stop on a forbidden plot, the player cannot roll the dice in one go. Players who stop at the ticket plot will lose 1,000 points or if they have a “Free from paying ticket” card they can exchange it with the bank so that the points are not reduced by 1,000. Each player has 10,000 points saved in the bank. Players who stop at the bank plot can take their share of points as long as savings in the bank are still available. A player is said to be bankrupt if the points collected are negative.

Through this relaxed but fun game, players, especially children, have new tools in the learning process. The extension of the monopoly game based on mathematical concepts has proven that learning does not always have to be done in a formal environment. So this modification of the monopoly game can have a positive impact in the form of increasing interest in mathematics, increasing self-confidence in calculating and increasing mathematical literacy.
